1948 Cleveland Indians @ 1939 New York Yankees -- Game 2

Indians 7, Yankees 2
PotG: Bob Lemon, Cle 1948

Indians lead the series 2-0

This one was all Indians, starting with 2 in the 1st and 3 in the 2nd. The Yankees managed a couple of runs against Bob Lemon, but they were never really in this one.

1977 New York Yankees @ 1905 New York Giants -- Game 2

Giants 4, Yankees 3 (12 innings)
PotG: Christy Mathewson, NYG 1905

Series tied 1-1

The two teams traded runs until it was 2-2 going into extra innings. Reggie Jackson led off the top of the 12th with a solo homer, and the Yankees took a 1-run lead into the bottom of the inning. The Yankees got the first 2 Giants batters out, and then George Browne hit a routine grounder to second that should've ended it. But Randolph misplayed it, and Browne arrived at first base safely. This was followed by a single by Mike Donlin, and then a double by Dan McGann that scored both runners and won the game for the Giants.

1939 New York Yankees @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 3

Indians 6, Yankees 5
PotG: Larry Doby, Cle 1948

Indians lead the series 3-0

The Yankees started off strong, with 4 in the 1st. The Indians got 3 in the next 2 innings, and New York added an insurance run in the 7th. But then the Indians sent 8 to the plate in the 8th, scoring 3 more runs, taking the game, and coming one game away from a sweep.

1905 New York Giants @ 1977 New York Yankees -- Game 3

Giants 5, Yankees 4
PotG: Christy Mathewson, NYG 1905

Giants lead series 2-1

This looked like a blowout for the Giants in the first half of the game, as they were up 4-0 by the 5th inning. The Yankees came back to tie it with a run in the 6th and another 3 in the 7th, which included a solo shot by Reggie Jackson. But with 2 outs in the top of the 8th, Sammy Strang hit a single that scored the runner from 2nd. The Yankees went quietly in the last 2 innings, and the Giants took the series lead.

1939 New York Yankees @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 4

Yankees 11, Cleveland 10
PotG: Lou Boudreau, Cle 1948

Indians lead the series 3-1

A slugfest on both sides. They traded multiple runs in the first 3 innings, then each added 1 in the 4th, at which point Cleveland led 8-5. But the Yankees scored 6 over the next 2 innings, going up 11-8. Joe Gordon's 2-run homer in the 7th got Cleveland to within 1, but they couldn't put another run across the plate. The Yankees managed to avoid the sweep and extend the series.

1905 New York Giants @ 1977 New York Yankees -- Game 4

Giants 5, Yankees 0
PotG: Red Ames, NYG 1905

Giants lead series 3-1

The Giants powered their way to their third straight win behind the dominating performance of Red Ames. Ames threw a complete game 4-hit shutout, and the Yankees very rarely even threatened to score.

1939 New York Yankees @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 5

Indians 9, Yankees 1
PotG: Lou Boudreau, Cle 1948

Indians win the series 4-1

Al Gettel suffocated the Yankees' offense, holding them to 4 hits and 1 run. Meanwhile, the Indians' offense was nearly unstoppable, capped by two 2-run home runs by Lou Boudreau. Boudreau also had a double in the game (after which he also scored, for a total of 3 runs scored).

Below is the summary screen.

1948 Cleveland Indians (#49) 4, 1939 New York Yankees (#5) 1

1905 New York Giants @ 1977 New York Yankees -- Game 5

Giants 3, Yankees 1
PotG: Red Ames, NYG 1905

Giants win series 4-1

For the second straight game, Red Ames dominated the Yankee lineup, and for the fourth straight game, the Giants came out on top. Lou Piniella did get to him for an RBI single in the 1st inning, but Ames settled down after that. It was good for the Giants that he did, because Dock Ellis was holding them scoreless with a great game of his own, right up until the 6th inning. Ellis still had a good game overall, but the 3 runs he allowed in the 6th and 7th were the Yankees' undoing.

And that's the end of Round 6! We are now down to just 2 teams, and soon we'll start the All-Time World Series Championship Round! Here are our final teams, and how they got here.

#49 1948 Cleveland Indians
Round 1: def. #80 1918 Red Sox 4-0
Round 2: def. #16 1911 A's 4-3
Round 3: def. #17 1970 Orioles 4-3
Round 4: def. #64 1963 Dodgers 4-2
Round 5: def. #40 1968 Tigers 4-0
Round 6: def. #5 1939 Yankees 4-1

#10 1905 New York Giants
Round 1: Bye
Round 2: def. #55 1957 Braves 4-2
Round 3: def. #23 1903 Americans 4-2
Round 4: def. #7 1929 A's 4-3
Round 5: def. #15 1915 Red Sox 4-2
Round 6: def. #54 1977 Yankees 4-1

We'll be getting the final round started either tomorrow or the next day, and it will be presented in the same way Round 6 was.

So who do you think will win? The Giants are favored, but the Indians have already shown they can beat the top-ranked teams; they've beaten 3 that had 1st Round Byes. Could the Giants be their 4th? Stay tuned!

And guess what? My Dropbox is still not letting me copy the link (I've even cleared out more than a GB of space to make sure it would let me). So once again, until I can get that to work, here is where the updated bracket can be seen on the OOTP forums.

Here we go...

1948 Cleveland Indians @ 1905 New York Giants -- Game 1

Indians 5, Giants 4
PotG: Bob Feller, Cle 1948

Indians lead series 1-0

The Indians jumped out to a 2-0 1st inning lead. It became 5-1 thanks to a 3-run 6th that saw 8 Cleveland players coming to the plate. The Giants scored another in the 8th, and had a 2-out comeback in the 9th, that saw them scoring 2 runs with the winning and tying runs on 1st and 3rd, respectively. But Mike Donlin flew out to center, and the Indians took the game.

1948 Cleveland Indians @ 1905 New York Giants -- Game 2

Giants 12, Indians 6
PotG: Christy Mathewson, NYG 1905

Series is tied 1-1

Cleveland took a comfortable lead into the bottom of the 3rd, having scored 2 runs in each of the first 3 innings. The fact that the Giants scored 2 in the bottom of the 3rd inning wasn't too concerning, as it only closed the gap to 6-2. But then New York had a 3-run 6th, including a 1-out, 2-run triple by George Browne, and the Cleveland lead was just 6-5. And the Giants comeback really picked up steam in the 7th, as they scored 6 more runs on nothing but singles, a pair of walks and a couple of Cleveland errors. The Indians managed to get runners to 2nd in both the 8th and 9th innings, but couldn't get them any further, and the Giants' comeback was complete.

1905 New York Giants @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 3

Giants 5, Indians 3
PotG: Christy Mathewson, NYG 1905

Giants lead series 2-1

The top of the 3rd started with a leadoff single by pitcher Christy Mathewson, and got worse for the Indians from there. Three walks and an error later, Cleveland got the first out of the inning and the Giants had put 3 on the board. The Indians added one of their own in the 5th, but each inning after that was even, and the Giants came out on top.

1905 New York Giants @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 4

Indians 4, Giants 2
PotG: Bob Lemon, Cle 1948

Series tied 2-2

The Indians scored all 4 of their runs in the 1st inning with nothing heavier than singles. That would be all they needed, as Bob Lemon held the Giants to 6 hits and 2 runs, evening the series at 2.

And I'm really glad it is. The worst thing would be to go through all of this and end it with a sweep. This one's going 6 or 7, just as it should be.

1905 New York Giants @ 1948 Cleveland Indians -- Game 5

Giants 3, Indians 2
PotG: Red Ames, NYG 1905

Giants lead series 3-2

This game was dominated by Red Ames and Bob Feller, each holding the other team scoreless until the bottom of the 8th. In that inning, with 1 out and the bases loaded, a passed ball got past Roger Bresnahan, allowing Dale Mitchell to score the first run of the game. An error by Bill Dahlen on the same at bat allowed the 2nd run, and Cleveland had a good chance at another win. That chance got even better as Feller easily got the first 2 batters he faced in the 9th, both with grounders to 2nd. But the next 4 batters went single, triple, single, double, and suddenly the Giants had a 3-2 lead. A single and an error got the Indians back within striking distance in the bottom of the 9th, but Hal Peck hit into a double play, ending the game and putting the Giants 1 win from the All-Time World Series Championship.

1948 Cleveland Indians @ 1905 New York Giants -- Game 6

Indians 2, Giants 1 (10)
PotG: Bob Feller, Cle 1948

Series tied 3-3

Another pitchers' duel, Bob Feller and Christy Mathewson had their teams at 1-1 after 9 innings. With 2 outs in the top of the 10th, Dale Mitchell hit a single to keep the inning alive. Allie Clark then drilled a triple into right field, scoring Mitchell and putting Cleveland up. That's all they would get, but that's all they'd need as Feller took the Giants down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th, tying the series at 3.

Thank you to everyone who followed along, and I hope you enjoyed it. I'm not planning on doing this again next year, but who knows?
